Saving Money by Cutting Coupons Improves Lives: Sisters of Savings Seek to Educate and Give Back to the Community

Saving money at the grocery checkout improves the lives of families and helps those less fortunate in the community.

(PRWEB) October 12, 2006 -- Sisters of Savings seek to educate families on how to save hundreds of dollars a month simply by using coupons and how to use that savings to give back to the community. Founded by natural sisters Cheryl Jackson and Lynette Shofner, the organization teaches how to cut a grocery bill, sometimes by as much as ninety percent, while more than tripling the amount of food purchased. It is the Sisters of Savings mission to improve lives and increase the money leftover in households.

The savings are evident within their sisterhood and brotherhood of growing members. With over 350,000 hits to their website in the past two weeks it is evident that the need to save money is great. The media has picked up on this buzz and they recently put the Sisters to the test. That day the Sisters saved over $225.00 on a $306.83 grocery bill total.

“This has been a very hard year for my husband and me,” Alyson Roberts, a Sister of Savings member says. “We had another baby and my husband quit his job to pursue another career. Needless to say, money has been tight at times and other times non-existent. A friend of mine referred me to the Sisters of Savings website. I looked at the website and said it looks great, but still didn't jump into action. Finally, I took my last eight dollars to purchase four Dallas Morning News newspapers just for all the coupons. Then I went shopping.

I calculated the meals that I purchased for last week and the cost was only $6.49. Over a month ago, we would have spent over $100 dollars. I cannot lie! On the Sisters of Savings shopping buddy list that I received, they revealed that a certain brand of product was free at Tom Thumb so immediately I went to the store and I stocked up on meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also got breads to go with our meats and vegetables and it was also FREE. My husband and I will finally be able to get caught up on our bills because the bills are a temporary situation. But the Sisters of Savings program is now a permanent fixture in our life,” Mrs. Roberts explains.

Giving families a bright new future has become a direct result of teaching them how to cut coupons and how to shop. Each week, members of the Sisters of Savings shopping buddy club will receive a shopping buddy list with all the grocery stores listed and their sale items. In addition, it notes coupons available for that week through the newspapers. An example of savings for this week was a jar of Bush’s Chili that retails for $2.57, Sisters of Savings found it on sale 3 for $5.00 which equals $1.67 a jar, when they applied the $1.50 off coupon to the sale price, they walked away paying only .17 for each jar of Bush’s Chili.

“This thing really works and it’s working fast,” member Chandra Hawthorne says. “I went out tonight for the first time by myself to try out everything I'd learn from the Sisters of Savings seminar. I had my Sisters of Savings binder that keeps my coupons organized, my SOS shopping buddy, and all my savings tips- the whole nine yards! My first stop was Kroger. I bought seven Viva paper towels, 10 bags of Success brown rice, and nine sticks of Philly cream cheese. My total should have been about $23.00 and I only spent $3.23! That’s a 91% savings; I kept my receipt to prove it!

But the savings isn’t only benefiting the families who cut coupons using Sisters of Saving’s method. It’s also giving back to the community. With all the extra groceries the Sisters of Savings are collecting and the money they are saving in doing so, there’s more than enough food to go around. The abundance is given to their favorite charity, The Touch Ministry, and to shelters, and food banks to feed those who don’t have the luxury of cutting coupons and going to the grocery stores themselves.

Co-Founder Cheryl Jackson explains “food banks and shelters need food at other times besides the holidays. So not only can our sisters now afford to stock their own pantries and deep freezers, they can more than afford to give a grocery bag or two to someone less fortunate. And they do. It’s not uncommon to see our sister’s drop off grocery bags full of food for someone in need. Jackson also enjoys asking cashiers “Do you believe in magic” as they both watch the grocery bill lower by every coupon swapped and every reward card used.”

Sandy Cullers, a Sister of Savings member agrees. “With my involvement as a member of community and social organizations such as LULAC and Las Comrades, I am able to help spread the word to those around me. The Sisters of Savings have taught me how to save money and shop effectively. I have also learned how to give and help charities, and I have made some incredible friends. The Sisters of Savings is not only a tool to help make our lives easier, it’s an incredible fellowship of people who all share incredible stories of savings and special friendships!”

Sisters of Savings hold seminars to teach others how to save and help improve lives in the community. The cost of the seminar is $25.00 (with $5.00 off each registration to be given to The Touch Ministry).
